I had an appointment to visit a cottage in the heart of the New Forest. The property had recently been purchased by a couple wanting to completely renovate it to a contemporary but sympathetic finish. They started by erecting a conservatory leading from the kitchen as they wanted to feel as if they were able to enjoy the garden from inside as well as out. The kitchen area was ready to be planned!
The existing kitchen was a 1980s ‘wood’ with laminate worktops. It was dark and offered restricted access to the dining room. The brief was to make a new area, by removing walls, to make a more open plan light and airy space that would lead into the new conservatory. Top of their wish list was an American style fridge-freezer, which, combined with new ovens, dishwasher and warming drawers, did not eave a lot of space for cabinetry. Collaboration and meticulous planning was essential to ensure there was plenty of working and storage space. Now the space is filled with gentle curves and clever storage solutions.
